Just like the good old days

All the signs are that for the first autumn in a decade, the deep water areas of the Waveney are hosting fish shoaled up as the temperature falls.

The deep water right over on the Norfolk bank before the bend at Boaters Hills, Beccles yielded 37lb of quality roach. The old favourite in the Woodyard on the Waveney Hotel doorstep has been producing real quality roach as in its days of fame. Downstream of Wainford Maltings on the free bank, 34lb of roach came to caster from deep water. Then in the Bungay Cherry Tree AC match at the Falcon Meadow, chairman Steve Woodcock recorded his fifth win of the year. He took a wonderful caster bag to dominate the match with just an ounce short of 21lb on the caster and red maggot from the deep Orchard swim above the weir. With less than two weeks to go before the Beccles Quay Marina opens for fishing on November 1, plenty of roach and skimmers are hanging in the river responding to a bit of groundbait and the feeder now.

David Feek, breaking away from serving petrol at the Tesco pumps, found C Lake of the Marsh Trail particularly productive fishing within inches of the bank close in. Great green fat tench and roach to a pound have been abundant as the carp pause to readjust to lower temperatures.

Topcroft has provided some fine sport on the feeder flung to the middle now most of the bigger fish have vacated the margins and their late in the day patrols. Bales Nursery Fishery at Ellingham, has its darker corners of the old section giving the best results, with several 8lb carp and some nice roach making a day out worthwhile on plain white bread.

The Match Lake at Aldeby Hall is all set to throw up nice bags of skimmers and roach from comfortable stagings and shelter among the trees as colder weather sets in with a number of 30lb bags on the pole leading the way. Broome Pits Central Kidney water is holding out well in the big roach stakes and fish nearing 2lb were taken on caster. In B Pit, near to the second island, the feeder has produced 120lb of bigger bream.
