Curry event to help victims of tsunami

Generous members of the Bangladeshi community in Norfolk hope to raise thousands of pounds for the homeless and hungry in southern Asia on Tuesday.

About 26 restaurants and take-aways are holding a curry evening and have pledged to donate all the money paid by customers for their meals to help those left devastated by the tsunami.

Rahim Baksh, owner of the Passage to India at Magdalen Street, Norwich, said: “We have a strong Bangladeshi community here and we got together and decided to hold this event. We did the same thing after the flooding in Bangladesh last year and raised £26,000, but we are hoping to raise more this time round.”

Mohabat Sheikh, owner of the Nazma Brasserie in Magdalen Street, Norwich, added: “After the disaster we thought that we must do something and because we had done an event like this before we decided to do it again. We arranged a meeting at my restaurant and everyone agreed to the idea of a charity night. Twenty-six restaurants are taking part, which is one or two more than last time.”

The restaurants (eat in or take-away collection) taking part are: Ali Tandoori, Magdalen Street, Norwich; Bombay Restaurant, Timber Hill, Norwich; Bengal Spice, St Benedict's, Norwich; Balti House, Rose Lane, Norwich; Fakenham Tandoori, Holt Road, Fakenham; Gate of India, Market Place, Aylsham; Jewel of India, Magdalen Street, Norwich; La Bone, Cromer Road, Sheringham; Nazma Brasserie, Magdalen Street, Norwich; Nimmi Indian Cuisine, Whitehart Street, Thetford; Passage to India, Magdalen Street, Norwich; Prince of Bengal, Mundesley Road, North Walsham; Shapla Tandoori, Queens Square, Attleborough; Shapla Tandoori, Town Green, Wymondham; Taste of India, Bull Street, Holt; Raj Villa, Prince of Wales Road, Norwich; Spice of India, Holt Road, Horsford.

Takeaways signed up for the evening are: Delhi Spice, Magpie Road, Norwich; Good Food Take-away, St Stephen's Road, Norwich; Lucky Tandoori, Dereham Road, Norwich; Magic Pot, The Street, Poringland; Quality Indian Take-away, Harvey Lane, Norwich; Rice and Spice, Earlham Road, Norwich; Ripa Tandoori, Bishopbridge Road, Norwich; Saffron Takeaway, Queen's Road, Norwich; Shahzahan Tandoori, Waterloo Road, Norwich.
