Rail crash car 'was moving'

01 March 2007 14:26

Senior investigating officers said today that the car involved in a collision with a train this morning had been moving when it was struck.

Supt Dave Roney of the British Transport Police said that the silver Vauxhall Astra driven by a male who died at the scene, was crossing the crossing when the crash occurred.

He said that police were currently interviewing eye witnesses who had been driving along the road when the crash happened.

The 6.22 from Colchester to Norwich collided with the car at level crossings in Swainsthorpe at 7.25 this morning. The collision which took place at speed of 100mph shunted the car two miles up the track towards Norwich and left debris scattered along a large stretch of the line.

At midday today Supt Roney said the body of the male driver was still on the line and in the process of being recovered.

None of the 44 passengers on the train or the driver were injured in the collision and all were taken to Norwich Station where they continued their journey.

The line remains closed this afternoon with police and network rail workers only promising to re-open it as soon as possible.
