Olympic gymnastics star Louis Smith is to open an innovative £153,000 sports area in Bradwell, near Great Yarmouth, on Wednesday morning.

At 11.10am the bronze medallist from last year's Beijing Games will officially open the outdoor adiZone along with Yarmouth mayor Tony Smith.

The free to use adiZone will offer young people the chance to play basketball, football and tennis and try out climbing, gymnastics and dancing.

Measuring 625sq m the adiZone on the Mill Lane playing field is modelled on the London Games logo and is the first of its kind for the region.

Olympic sponsor Adidas is setting up the distinctive looking zones across the country to encourage young people to take up sports and emulate sporting heroes such as Denise Lewis and Daley Thompson.

The cost for the Bradwell adiZone is being shared equally between Adidas and Yarmouth Borough Council.

Graham Plant, borough councillor responsible for regeneration and tourism, said: “We were really pleased to work with Adidas on this exciting project which we hope will inspire people of all ages to be more active, more often.

“I know the adiZone will be a really welcome and needed addition to the local community.”
