Q&A with Nick Clegg

Liberal Democrats leader Nick Clegg has been in the EDP's Norwich office answering your questions in a live webchat ahead of his public meeting at Hellesdon High School this evening (June 18, 2009).

EDP24 Webdesk:

Why do you think you can win in Norwich North given that the Lib Dems have been on the retreat on the city council and neighbouring South Norfolk and did not manage to increase its number of seatst at the county council in the recent local elections? (Shaun Lowthorpe, EDP)

Reply:

I think politics is very fluid at the moment. Clearly many people have given up on Labour, but they're not yet persuaded that the Conservatives have got the answer. The economic crisis and the MPs expenses scandals mean that lots of people are looking for different answers to the normal tweedle-dee tweedle-dum politics of the old parties. The Lib Dems were the first to identify the risk of a looming recession, and the first to propose radical changes to Westminster. So I think there's a good chance many people will want to support us this time round.

EDP24 Webdesk:

Where are you having your summer holiday? Have you considered a break on the Broads or somewhere else in this region? (Steve)

Reply:

I always go on Summer holidays to the same place - at the In Laws in a small rural town in the middle of Spain (my wife's Spanish).

EDP24 Webdesk:

Would you have come to Norwich today if David Cameron had not been here on Monday? (Shaun Lowthorpe, EDP)

Reply:

I've visited Norwich several times before, and will do so many times again. I'm happy to debate the changes Britain needs with David Cameron - but my diary is not organised around his!

Steve Cox:

Mr Clegg, People are fed up with spin, so I would appreciate an honest answer: why did the LIb Dems oppose tough sentences for gun carriers, murderers and dangerous drivers?

Reply:

We don't. In fact, we've argued against some automatic sentence reductions. We believe that sentencing should fit the crime, and the sentences served should be made clear in court. People are understandably fed up with the way that time served in prison is sometimes very different to their understanding of the sentence imposed.

EDP24 Webdesk:

Should Ian Gibson have resigned? (Sarah)

Reply:

Whatever you think of Ian Gibson's second home arrangements, I think he was badly treated by Gordon Brown. By all accounts, he was given very little chance to defend himself, and seemed to have been targeted by Labour bosses because he's an independent minded MP who didn't tow the party line. If he was going to be forced to resign, he should first have been given the chance to give his side of the story - that's only fair.

george edwards:

What is your party's policy on pensions Will you keep winter payments and benifits or scrap the benefits save money on present form filling fraud of the scheme and the costs of fraud cases in court Margaret Thatcher has lost pensioners £60 by changing the earnings payment will you give it us back Don't forget grey voters are many and have not forgot your basic £25 gaff you made

Reply:

We believe in a decent basic state pension so that people can retire with dignity. And that means restoring the earnings link. We will also seek to scrap Council Tax which is an unfair tax which hits many retired people living in their own homes very hard. We also want to see big changes to the demeaning means tested pensions credits which are so complicated that many pensioners don't even know they're entitled to receive them.

With Green councillors in Norwich why should people vote Lib Dem? (Sarah)

Reply:

I can understand why some people vote Green at a time when Westminster politics is in such a mess. But the real question is which party can bring the big changes needed to make our economy sustainable, create green jobs and clean up politics from top to toe. With the greatest will in the world, I don't see how a party which has never had any MPs in Wesminster will be in a position to do that. By contrast, we now have more MPs than we have had for generations, and at the local elections recently we pushed Labour firmly into third place - so there's great scope for us to make the changes that many Green voters want.
