Spring into washable nappies & make real savings

Parents in Norfolk were reminded that there is a real choice when it comes to nappies, with a series of talks and demonstrations to antenatal and postnatal groups. Norfolk's waste reduction team dispelled myths and emphasised that using modern washable nappies can help parents save money and reduce their carbon footprint.

Ian Monson, Cabinet member for the Environment and Waste Management, said: "In Norfolk, we estimate that we are burying around one tonne of disposable nappies in landfill sites for each child, at a cost of £40 per tonne just in landfill tax. When you add the waste collection and disposal costs for this waste, it runs into hundreds of thousands of pounds."

"Parents are also spending thousands of pounds each year buying disposable nappies - with an estimated £1,000 bill to use disposable nappies for just one child, compared to up to £500 for using washable nappies."

A recent study* comparing the lifecycle of disposable and reusable nappies found that washable nappies can be 40% more environmental friendly than disposables if parents follow a few basic steps:

Washing nappies in a full load at 60°C or less,
Outdoor line drying, and
Reusing nappies on a second child.

The environmental impact can be reduced even further by choosing A+ energy efficiency ratings when replacing appliances and by tumble-drying as little as possible.

Rachel Stewart, Waste Reduction Officer, Norfolk County Council, added: "There is now a wide range of washable nappies on the market for parents to choose from, with most available via washable nappy suppliers and agents, the internet and mail order. Many parents are surprised to see that modern washable nappies are fun, fashionable and easy to use and wash."

"We advise parents who are interested in using washable nappies to talk to a number of suppliers and other parents, and to consider trial packs or second hand nappies."

To help parents offset the initial set-up costs, Norfolk County Council offers £30 cash back for parents who have spent £45 or more on washable nappies, wraps, liners and/or training pants. Terms and conditions apply. Call 0844 800 8004 or visit www.norfolk.gov.uk/nappies to find out more.

Parents can also ask their midwife or health visitor to request a talk or demonstration by the Waste Reduction team throughout the year.
