Full House for Ultimate Eco Tour
Whether it's the credit crunch or carbon emissions keeping people from jetting off for continental weekend breaks, an exclusive green alternative offering free places for 100 people to visit the county's biggest facility for sorting recycled waste has been a great hit, with all places snapped up.
The Material Recycling Facility (MRF) at Costessey handles 1,250 tonnes a week of paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and cans from kerbside collections right across Norfolk and the visit has been arranged for Wednesday 24 June by Recycle for Norfolk - the waste management partnership of county and district councils - as part of National Recycle Week
During the visit, the tourists will experience first hand how materials get sorted, see how contamination - sometimes from well-meaning people - causes problems, and find out what happens to recyclables once they leave the facility. They will also have the chance to see a closed landfill site and hear about the management measures that have to stay in place for years to prevent pollution and control landfill gas. They will also learn about the steps being taken by Norfolk County Council to deal with unrecyclable waste as landfill space diminishes and the future plans for Norfolk with regards to waste.
