Anglia Farmers is supporting these awards and particularly this category because it raises consumer awareness about the important role farmers have within the food production supply chain. With a turnover in excess of £140m, Anglia Farmers is now one of the UK's largest and most professional agricultural purchasing groups. Its purchasing power enables the group to buy advantageously on behalf of its 1,600 farmer and rural business members. This is particularly significant because against ever-rising costs - of fuel and fertiliser in particular - farmers are under pressure to keep producing essential everyday food ingredients such as wheat, barley, sugar beet, potatoes, vegetables, milk and meat. Added to which farmers are increasingly aware of the importance consumers place on food provenance. Many of them innovate to meet this need and this is evident through Norfolk's growing number of food outlets such as organic produce box schemes, restaurants, farm shops, pick-your-own ventures and the manufacture of specialist foods such as ice cream, cheeses and gluten-free pies.
