What a fantastic week to be a City fan. Premier League survival, aided by comedy goalkeeping at its finest and another strike from the most prolific City goalscorer never to actually play for the club (Gareth McAuley), followed by the superb victory by the Under 18s in the FA Youth Cup final which completely derailed ITV4’s Chelsea love-in.

And so, after a roller coaster week, City’s fate is back in their own hands. However, whereas every other team in the relegation dogfight seems to have found a way to eke out a win when it was most needed City have been flatlining their way towards the abyss.

The long awaited demise of QPR on Sunday was a pertinent reminder not only that second season syndrome is a reality but also that throwing huge sums of money around doesn’t guarantee anything in football.

Given the amount of criticism of officials in last week’s column I should probably start this week’s with a pat on the back for Mike Dean for by far the best refereeing performance I’ve seen at Carrow Road since City returned to the Premier League.

In nearly 50 years of going to football matches I can’t remember coming away feeling as angry as I did on Saturday, having seen one man make five game-changing errors in the space of as many minutes, every one of them in favour of the home side.

What a difference a goal makes. Had Luke Moore not exploited the dangerous tendency towards ball watching which afflicted City’s defenders on Saturday, I wonder how different post game reactions would have been?

It was inevitable that, after the loss of a game which had been billed as the proverbial six-pointer, resulting in the relegation positions looming a little larger, there would be a great deal of concern among City fans this week. While safety is within touching distance it seems a very long way away at the moment.

It would appear that the days of Norwich City being patronised by the media might be coming to an end.

The less said about Saturday’s game the better. City were well below par and the increasingly awful conditions meant that the last 20 minutes were more redolent of two exhausted boxers slugging it out than a game of football.

We’re reaching the stage of the season where the boundaries between hope and expectation start to blur.

It was inevitable, and perfectly reasonable, that most of the headlines about Saturday’s game would revolve around Kei Kamara and Grant Holt.

You can, of course, prove pretty much anything with statistics.

These are frustrating times for Canary fans brought up on the flowing attacking football that is synonymous with our club.

According to the Beatles, money can’t buy you love, and judging from events at the weekend it can’t necessarily buy you security from relegation either.

As a football fan it’s hard to watch your team take a thumping, but City’s abject surrender at Anfield was the sort of performance that I hoped we wouldn’t see again this season, and inevitably it generated some extreme reactions.

I hardly need to watch a home game to tell whether Norwich City are playing badly because the guy behind me will invariably scream “You idiot!” at every City player who makes a mistake.

Anyone who claims that time travel is just a myth has clearly never been to a game at London Road.

While footballers across Europe were enjoying a Christmas break, their English counterparts were being subjected to a brutal programme of four games in just 11 days.

If Norwich City’s unbeaten run started with a bang with the epic performance against Arsenal, it ended with a whimper at The Hawthorns as a strangely supine performance by the Canaries saw them defeated in a game in which they dominated possession without ever really going anywhere.

You must start to suspect that you have an ego problem when you feel the need to spend your Saturday afternoon trying to teach 26,000 people a lesson.
