Wells fish and chip shop recognised as one of the best in the UK

A Wells fish and chip shop has been recognised as one of the best in the UK after narrowly missing out on the top prize in a national awards scheme.

Platten’s Fish and Chips was joint runner-up in the newly-created Quality Award section of the National Fish and Chip Shop Awards.

But owner Phil Platten is targeting first place in the contest within a few years – and he is looking to expand the seafront business to build on its success.

The other runner-up was Harbour Lights in Falmouth, while the winner was The Chippy, based in Antrim, Northern Ireland.

Mr Platten said: “In total 8,500 fish and chip shops entered this so to finish in the top three is absolutely brilliant for us.

“It’s a shame we didn’t win but these are very highly-regarded awards. I’m delighted that we got so far.”

Mr Platten added: “We will look to enter more awards in the future and my aim is for us to be named fish and chip shop of the year in the next three or four years.”

He paid tribute to his “fantastic” staff, saying: “Many have been with me for several years and have done a great job in helping the business to come a long way.”

The awards are run by the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) and hosted by Seafish, the authority on seafood.

The Quality Award section is to specifically acknowledge UK fish and chip shops which raise the standards of the overall industry.

It rewards shops that achieve the perfect balance between good quality products, clean hygienic premises, high standards of shop appearance and highly trained and competent managers and staff.

It also looks at what the fish and chip shops do to promote the fishing industry as a whole.

Mr Platten said he had plans to expand his business, which is based on Wells Quayside. He owns Shop With a View, which is based next to the fish and chip shop, and he plans to move this further along the Quayside to enable the fish and chip shop restaurant to expand.

He also intends to build five luxury flats above the fish and chip shop.
