There was fierce rivalry and a false start at Britain’s most easterly pancake race in Lowestoft town centre today (Tuesday).

Staff from five local businesses braved the cold weather to hit the starting line, all hungry for success.

Race day nerves got the better of the team from Heart, who left the starting block before town mayor Nick Webb had given the order to go.

The heat was run again and won by Heart, who went on to take third place overall in the competition.

Returning champions Iceland walked away with the first place trophy while Wilkinson came second.

The Journal failed to reach the final after a keenly-contested spectacle, which attracted a good crowd.

The race took place in London Road North, outside Westgate Department Store, and organisers hailed the event a success.
