A mayor has launched a competition to help provide a new branding for his town.

Beccles mayor Graham Catchpole wants to create an identity that can be used to help promote the town to tourists.

Mr Catchpole wants a logo to help sell Beccles to others, and has launched a competition to design one.

He said: “The council are looking for a logo which encompasses the ambiance and beauty of Beccles as a tourist attraction.

“The town sign does not say anything about Beccles to tourists miles away. We aren’t going to replace the town sign, this is just for promotional purposes, but we want something that shows what Beccles gives to tourists in one snapshot.”

Mr Catchpole said he would expect the logo to include the Beccles Tower, but the only specific demand is that it includes the town’s name and tells the story of what it offers as a tourist destination.

It will also need to be a simple design on an A5 sheet so that it can still clearly be seen when shrunk.

Mr Catchpole said the competition is also being opened up to children, with age group prizes.

“We want the kids involved as we thought everyone should be, and hopefully it will be something to identify with them for years to come,” he said.

The winning designer will receive a £20 gift voucher, while £10 will go to age group winners between five to eight, nine to 12 and 13 to 16.

  • I think my friend Johnny here fails to realise the value in a well executed identity, however I do agree with him that it's not likely to draw tourists into the town, it may, at best improve the externally facing image of the town. Ultimately though I wouldn't expect anything more than a crudely drawn children's drawing for £20. I suppose his next investment will be a £50 B&Q voucher for whomever builds a new community center.

  • You do not need a new logo Mr Mayor. Just keep your town clean and tidy. plenty of free car parking, The right mix of shops. Keep the rates low. A logo will do nothing but its easy to do it just costs money that we do not have..

  • Good grief, is the only thing missing from a vibrant tourism industry in Beccles a logo? I don't live in the town, but visit regularly for Tesco, Morrisons and the occasional town centre shop, so can I please ask someone in the know....just what is this Mayor referring to when he talks of Beccles as a tourist destination?

  • Captures the ambiance and beauty hey !!! How about this then...... the background would be a landscape of charity shops, boarded up pubs, out of date sports facilities with kids loitering in the foreground with nothing to do. Sure to be a winner !!
