Jonathan Lyon, 27, had been trying to think of a way to pop the question to Jess Cooke, 23, for the last few months.

But it was their shared love of cattle and her family’s connection to the Royal Norfolk Show which saw him go down on one knee in front of thousands of onlookers.

“We have been together for three years and got together showing cattle,” said Mr Lyons.

“I wanted to propose to her but it was hard to know where and when. Jess’s family has been associated with the show for many years - her grandad has a ring named after him. It means a lot to her and everybody in Norfolk.”

Crying and hugging, the pair were presented with champagne and congratulated by both friends and strangers when they left the Grand Ring.

Miss Cooke moved from her home of Oby in Norfolk to Lincolnshire three months ago, and now works with a cattle herd of 150.

The couple, who keep 50 suckler cattle won champion and reserve at the Royal Norfolk Show yesterday.

Asked how it felt to be proposed to in the Grand Ring, Miss Cooke said: “It was embarrassing at first but it was really sweet of him. The show means so much to me - and we had such a good day yesterday.”
