Hundreds of visitors have descended on Cromer to enjoy the second day of the town’s week-long carnival.

Crowds gathered on Cromer Pier Forecourt at lunchtime on Sunday to watch comedian Jimmy Cricket crown this year’s carnival queen Elsie Yiasimi.

Miss Yiasimi arrived at the venue in an open-top car before taking her position on a golden throne. She was attended by Molly Downes, Alice Digby, Faye Johnstone and Kelsie Horner and joined by carnival prince and princess Harry Butler and Ellen Hedge, who all arrived in separate chauffeur driven vehicles. Leading the motorcade was 12-year-old Olympic torch bearer Natasha Smith.

Mr Cricket entertained the audience with a short variety show of song, dance and comedy during the ceremony, which was followed by a concert by Bagshot Concert Band.

Mr Cricket said: “It is has been absolutely wonderful in Cromer and of course we have got a cracking day for it. I thought the carnival queen looked beautiful and it was a nice thing to be able to crown her.”

The fun got under way early at the carnival ground, where there was a custom and American car show, dog show, gymkhana and live music as well as competitions including bonny babies, knobbly knees, glamorous grandmothers and children’s fancy dress.

Carnival chairman Tony Shipp said: “The crowning of the carnival princess was a wonderful occasion. Jimmy Cricket got the crowd involved and has really made it great. And with the brass band playing as well, the atmosphere has been like a lovely old fashioned seaside resort.

“There is also a lot going on at the carnival ground and people seem to be having a really good time.

“We had a brilliant first day and it the second is going to be just as good. We look forward to seeing crowds for the rest of the week.”

  • Well done Cromer. Went to the Car Show, - the catering in the refreshment tent was excellent and at very reasonable prices. What a lovely change to the normal rip-offs. Congrats also on the loos, which were plumbed in, and spotless right to the end of the day.
