Gender should not be a barrier to men or women excelling in the world of tech, according to a young female developer who is organising awards to celebrate the region’s best female minds in the industry.

A former Google engineer was fired from the tech giant earlier this month after sending an internal memo criticising diversity initiatives.

But Vickie Allen, founder of Norwich-based women’s tech network SyncDevelopHER, said gender should not be assumed as a barrier to ability.

The 23-year-old developer at Norwich firm Proteo is making preparations for the third DevelopHER Awards, with nominations open in 14 categories for women in the tech sector in East Anglia.

Following successful events in Norwich and Ipswich, this year’s ceremony will be held in Cambridge in an effort to broaden SyncDevelopHER’s reach across the region.

Nominations close on Monday, September 4.
