Bury St Edmunds pubs and brewing group Greene King had committed itself to hiring 2,000 new apprentices, as part of nation-wide package of pledges by employers which will see more than 20,000 apprenticeship roles created around the UK.

The announcement, timed to coincide with National Apprenticeship Week, which ends today, also includes a total of 42 apprenticeships with Anglian Water.

The roles at Greene King will be spread around the country, including some in Suffolk. Four smaller local employers, Smiths Row in Bury and the New Wolsey Theatre, Sanctuary Personnel and Dance East in Ipswich, have pledged 14 more apprenticeships between them.

These are in addition to BT’s announcement last week that it plans to create more than 100 new roles in the eastern region, mostly at its Adastral Park research facility near Ipswich and involving a mix of apprenticeships and graduate jobs.

Nationally, more than 280 businesses have committed themselves to creating new apprenticeships, including 5,000 at Lloyds Banking Group and 1,000 each at mobile network company EE, pubs and bars operator Mitchells & Butlers and coffee chain Starbucks.

Skills and Enterprise Minister Matthew Hancock, the MP for West Suffolk, said: “We want to make going to university or into an apprenticeship the new norm, and over half of young people say they would like to do an apprenticeship if one were available, so it’s great that, as National Apprenticeship Week 2014 comes to a close, we can announce that 20,432 new positions are to be created.”
