Students encouraged to be entrepreneurial by Adnams scheme
Students will be encouraged to grow and sell fresh produce through a social enterprise being launched by a brewery.
Suffolk-based brewer Adnams has unveiled its Food for Thought project which will see it work with local schools to supply fruit and vegetables to the company’s hotels.
Flegg High School, in Norfolk, and Wenhaston Primary School, in Suffolk, have already begun producing ingredients for Adnams with Flegg High School providing herbs and potatoes for The White Horse at Blakeney while Wenhaston is growing tomatoes which are being made into chutney at The Swan and The Crown in Southwold.
Project manager Siobhan Eke said: “The Food for Thought project aims to grow children as well as food.
“Our goal is for all pupils to develop a breadth of knowledge, capabilities and life-skills, which they, the schools, Ofsted, future employers and businesses value and require. The positive reactions and results from a wide range of pupils – from five to 15 years old – touches, inspires and enthuses me.
“You can see it right from the moment the first seeds of the Food for Thought philosophy are planted. I genuinely wish every child, business and community had the opportunity to be involved in a similar endeavour.
“We’d all be richer for it and reap the rewards.”
The project will be extended to other educational institutions with Adnams asking for potential partners to get in touch.
The EDP/EADT Top100 brewery is providing start-up funding to buy seeds, equipment and materials for the project and pupils are also encouraged to reach out to businesses to make sponsorship deals.
The initiative is designed to develop students’ entrepreneurial and marketing skills, including pupils working with Adnams to create a logo for the scheme.
