Malt and malted ingredients company Muntons is expecting to cut its “carbon footprint” by nearly a fifth after securing a deal ensuring that 100% of its electricity come from “green” sources.
The Stowmarket-based company will be using power generated through a variety of technologies, including dyro-electric, wind, biomass, municipal waste and solar photovoltaic arrays, saving an estimated 11,900 tonnes of CO2 a year and cutting its overall emissions by around 18%.
Muntons has been focusing on reducing its environmental impacts for many years.
In 2011 it was named Sustainable Manufacturer of the Year by The Manufacturer in conjunction with Siemens and Royal Bank of Scotland, and it was a finalist in the competition again last year.
Nigel Davies, Munton’s manufacturing and sustainability director, said: “It is essential that any reduction in environmental impact is a real saving.
“Reflecting the importance Muntons places on true corporate sustainability we have now adopted the strapline of ‘Practical Sustainability − P.S. it’s no afterthought’.
“Sustainability is a core value that protects the environment and our business and enables us to find a competitive edge and protect local jobs,” added Dr Davies.
