The Stead and Simpson shoe shop will be closing in Dereham following “poor performance”, according to the national chain.

Big closing down signs have appeared outside the branch, which has traded on the corner of Wright’s Walk and High Street in the Dencora shopping area since 2005.

Some 200 stores, including the Dereham branch, were bought by rival chain Shoe Zone in January 2008.

A spokesman for Shoe Zone said: “We can confirm the store in Dereham is closing down due to poor performance and rising costs, which make the location unsustainable. We will try to redeploy staff who are affected wherever possible.”

She would not confirm when it would close or how many staff are employed at the shoe shop.

The spokesman added the King’s Lynn branch, in New Conduit Street, was also closing down because of “poor performance” and “rising costs”. She did not know when that particular store would close.

Nigel Sizeland, Dencora development manager, said he believed the Dereham shop would close at the end of February next year and its stock would move into the town’s Shoe Zone store on the Market Place, which is currently being refitted.

Mr Sizeland said it is not yet known if the unit currently occupied by the shoe shop will be filled.

But he added: “If the right person comes along and makes the right noises, Dencora will be interested.”

  • I am the one member of staff from Dereham S&S not to have been redeployed to Shoe Zone and I have been given my notice of redundancy. The shop WILL close in December.

  • The S&S shop in Diss has been under massive "closure" notices for months now but the stock seems to keep on being replenished - just a marketing ploy. Like their shop in london st Norwich, always having "CLOSING DOWN [for refurbishment]" notices on the windows. Shoe Zone keep doing the same thing with their shops. False warnings make offers false. Is that legal?
