Richard Bowyer unblocked his first drain at eight years old – and now he does it by royal appointment.
It’s a journey that began with his parents in the east end of London in the 1970s and has since taken in Hong Kong, Australia and Sandringham.
In 2013, the Bowyers’ family-run Dyno-Rod franchise enters its 40th year reflecting on success, and looking to the future following the launch of a new plumbing service last year.
P Bowyer Associates was founded in 1974 by Mr Bowyer’s parents, Peter and Hazel, who left their life in London’s east end behind to take advantage of a new franchise opportunity in Norwich.
“My father had always wanted to work for himself, and he had that drive and motivation and knew this was a good opportunity,” said Mr Bowyer.
“It was one of the first non-fast food franchise opportunities and it was very exciting for them: it was chance to take control of their own success.”
The early days of the business saw Mrs Bowyer answering the phones while her husband unblocked the drains. The first week’s turnover was a princely £13.
Nearly 40 years on, the Rackheath-based business has grown to 45 staff, boasts year-on-year growth and is one of the longest-running franchises in the country.
Mr Bowyer said a focus on customer service and “doing what it says on the tin” had built a loyal customer base across East Anglia, adding: “When it’s your family you are very passionate about it, and our success comes from that passion.”
That passion and the attraction of being his own boss lured Mr Bowyer back to the company from four years in Australia, where he scoured the outback for gold as an exploration geologist.
He returned 21 years ago, and took over from his father in 2000, with brother Dan returning from Hong Kong to join him four years later.
“It wasn’t always in my mind to come back, but I had always worked for somebody else,” said Mr Bowyer. “There are pleasures and benefits but the real rewards come when you are working for yourself. Your successes and your failures come down to you and the team.”
Having worked for the Royal household at Sandringham since 1976, P Bowyer Associates received its Royal Warrant in 2006.
The company launched a Dyno Plumbing franchise earlier this year, and currently employs 17 staff.
Dyno-Rod is this year celebrating its 50th anniversary, and has 47 franchisees across the country.
