Plans to move and transform a redundant phone box to help local business owners in a north Norfolk seaside village are firmly underway.
Overstrand Parish Council is behind the vision to see the defunct phone box on Paul’s Lane moved to a prime location in the village, outside on the corner of the High Street and Cliff Road.
It would act as a tourist information hot spot for visitors to the area, promoting all there is to see and do in Overstrand and its nearby attractions.
Bruce Stratton is behind the plans and explained that the project came about after a meeting earlier this year.
He said: “The parish council called a meeting of all the businesses in Overstrand and of the thoughts voiced, people wanted to see more done to promote business in the village.
“Out of that came the idea to turn the defunct phone box into an information point.”
Mr Stratton, who has designed the plans, said the project would cost around £3,000 in total, which the parish council would hope to make back by selling advertising on a pictured map within the phone box.
The idea is to site the phone box on a paved area, next to a history panel, with a village map highlighting the businesses in the area and what’s on events.
The plan is also to include space for businesses to place their brochures around the map.
“We hope by the New Year to get underway with a proper launch of the project to invite businesses to a meeting to discuss getting a space on the board,” Mr Stratton said.
“It is hoped the businesses will support the idea and that the majority of the costs involved with the project will be recouped from sales of advertising.”
He added that this was a project which could be mirrored around the county. He said: “Everyone had defunct phone boxes in their area.”
This is one of two now unused phone boxes in Overstrand. The other is sited at Harbord Road and is also owned by the parish council.
The box was bought by the parish council for £1 as part of a scheme where phone boxes received a new lease of life.
