Norwich’s burgeoning coffee scene has prompted the creation of a new festival in the city next month.
With Norwich now boasting more than 60 coffee shops, organisers hope the Cafe Culture Norwich festival will bring out the coffee enthusiasts.
Richard Norman, of Diss based Mad About Coffee, who is organising a best barista competition as part of the festival, said: “The coffee industry has been recognised nationally for many years and it is about time we put Norwich on the map. We have some exceptional baristas in the city and this is our chance to raise the profile of coffee making as an art form, live and kicking in the region, as we are able to compete with the best.”
The festival will be part of the Norfolk Food and Drink Festival and its chair Sarah De Chair said she had tried to introduce new events to the six-week celebration of the region’s food and drink each year.
“Drinking coffee has become part of so many of our lives whether drinking with friends or grabbing a cup on the go. So do come along and learn a little more about coffee and the opportunity to talk to the many coffee baristas we have in our city,” she said.
Figures published recently in a report by industry analysts, Allegra Strategies, show that British high streets are enjoying significant benefits from the coffee industry. Based on research from talking to more than
2,000 consumers and local businesses, the report ‘The Role of Coffee Shops on the High Street 2014’ demonstrates that the presence of coffee shops typically boost local high street economies by 2% to 4%.
Footfall studies show that branded coffee shops can increase high street footfall by up to 28% and more than half (52%) of consumers interviewed for the study are more likely to shop for longer when there are coffee shops nearby.
Tim Bishop, Chief Executive of the Forum Trust said: “You can see dynamic new businesses emerging, new skills and new jobs and a real interest in locally sourced produce emerging which is all great for the local economy.”
Cafe Culture takes place on Friday 5th September at The Forum, in Norwich and will feature a barista competition and a wide range of coffee and cake demonstrations and stalls.
Baristas interested in taking part should call Faye on 01603 702374.
The words ‘I’m out’ too often spell the end for an invention before it has even left the drawing board.
