Norwich and Peterborough Building Society has withdrawn its Norwich City-linked accounts as it continues its rebrand.

Around 5,600 Norwich City Affinity accounts, through which the club and the account-holder earned interest, will be transferred to an alternative.

The plans are part of the rebrand which N&P owner Yorkshire Building Society Group announced in January.

Twenty-eight branches in East Anglia will be closed between September and December, with the loss of 136 jobs, while a further 17 branches in the region will remain open, but be rebranded under the Yorkshire name.

A Yorkshire Building Society Group spokesperson said: 'In recent years we have reduced the number of affinity accounts we offer as part of simplifying our range of savings products.

'Having reviewed our three remaining football club affinity relationships – with Huddersfield Town, Norwich City and Peterborough United – we have decided to draw them to a close.

'The accounts will be withdrawn from [on May 31] and we will write to existing customers in the coming weeks to notify them that their football affinity accounts will be transferred to an equivalent easy access savings product, paying at least the same rate of interest.

'The clubs are aware of our plans and will receive commission up until the accounts are transferred. We are ending our relationships on the good terms on which they have operated from the outset and we wish each club and their supporters every success in the future.'

N&P had a long-standing partnership with Norwich City, which included sponsoring the shirts and more recently Carrow Road's Norwich and Peterborough stand, which will be renamed the Regency Security stand for next season.
