Plans for an £8m new garden centre and restaurant on the site of the former Campbell’s factory in King’s Lynn will bring more than 120 new jobs to the town.

Dobbies is submitting an application to build the Garden World development alongside the new Tesco store on Campbell’s Meadow, which already has permission.

The company, also owned by the supermarket group, will be having a public exhibition about the development which will include a 350-seater restaurant.

“Our Lynn Garden World would bring more than 120 jobs to the area and will encourage an environmentally-friendly approach to 21st century living,” said Stuart Wright, director of property at Dobbies.

The exhibition will be held at the Hardwick Road Tesco on Tuesday, February 28, from 2pm to 8pm and company representatives will be on hand to answer any questions.

Both the supermarket and the garden centre will be built on the site of the former Campbell’s factory. The iconic cooling tower from the plant was demolished last month.

  • Thats more like it a development that will attract 120 jobs with NO cost to the taxpayer but £8 million to DobbiesTesco. Makes the trumpeting of 40 jobs at a cost to the Norfolk Taxpayer of £500 million and the UK Taxpayer of £169 million look pretty stupid does it not! You note that Dobbies is not even bothering to count the construction jobs because they know that on the whole specialist companies from outside of the area take these jobs and they are very short term. I think CW's latest claim of 1000 jobs must include the people in Germany building the components, the crew on the ship bringing them over, the staff at the port handling them, the accountants to all firms involved etc, etc. Not forgetting of course the many PR consultants employed to help force this monstrosity upon us. That's it, I did wonder how the 300 quoted to date became 1000, I had totally forgotten the numerous teams of PR people who have gained entry to supermarkets claiming to be carrying out an impartial survey on behalf of the county council!!!

  • Talking of which, Fenscape, at least with the new garden centre being located near the new Tory Wheelabrator Incinerator, the plants will be accustomed to all the emissions in the atmosphere before being planted in local gardens!

  • Erm, you obviously haven't had a knock on the door from Cory Wheelabrator then - according to them, King's Lynn's job centre is simply bursting at the seams with over 1,000 people who are qualified enough to build their incinerator for them......

  • Why would people in Kings Lynn want a Garden Centre? They spend ALL their time at the Job Centre!

  • I thought it was good news until I realised it's just the latest part of Tesco's plan to take over the World!
