A long-established north Norfolk business has a new chairman.

Holt-based C T Baker has appointed chartered accountant Malcolm Baker to the position, where he succeeds Eddie Ray, who has been on the board for 26 years and chairman for 18.

Mr Baker is an eighth generation descendent of John Baker who established the business in Holt in the 1700s, originally as an ironmongers.

In recent times the business has expanded under the managing directorship of his cousin Michael Baker to one with annual turnover in excess of £20m.

The company embraces the Bakers and Larners Department Store, Budgens supermarket at Holt and the C T Baker builders merchants chain.

Malcolm Baker was educated at Gresham’s School, as a prize winner when studying economics at the University of Bristol, and is now a chartered accountant in London, where he is chairman of Crowe Clark Whitehill, one of the UKs top 20 audit and accountancy firms

Mr Baker said: ‘I am honoured to follow Eddie who has been a source of wisdom for the board.”

Michael Baker added his thanks to Mr Ray and looked forward to Malcolm’s support as they looked to continue to develop the “unique business’.
