A Norfolk poultry company is set to create 200 jobs after securing a major deal to supply chickens to supermarket chain Morrisons.
Banham Poultry, of Attleborough, has signed the three-year deal with Morrisons to supply half-a-million chickens a week.
The deal is a huge boost to the EDP Top 100 firm and also helps to secure the jobs of its 700 existing staff.
Sarah Foulger, company spokesman, said the new deal would start at the end of March. “Banham Poultry Ltd are delighted to announce the signing of a three-year supply agreement with Wm Morrison Supermarkets Plc,” she said. “This is a major deal for the business which should secure the employment of its 700 loyal staff and create around 200 full-time permanent jobs in the area.”
Banham is looking to move to its old home at Bunns Bank industrial park while its existing site is redeveloped with plans including a supermarket, bulky goods store, petrol stations, offices, pub and fast food restaurant.
Mid Norfolk MP George Freeman, who helped the company secure planning permission for its new site, welcomed the deal.
“This is brilliant news for Attleborough,” he said. “I was delighted to be able to help Banham secure permission and grant-funding for their new premises. Properly planned, the move creates a major opportunity to revitalise Attleborough town centre.
“This deal signals a richly deserved leap forward for the company and the chance for hundreds of jobs to be created in our area.
“More than that, however, it is a reminder that the food and agricultural sector is world-class business. This is a massive feather in the cap for one of Norfolk’s traditional local businesses.
“That they are able to win such a major contract – with a firm like Morrisons that prides itself on a quality supply-chain and the quality of local product – is a tribute to the workforce and leadership at Banham.”
