Industry experts praise motivation of Norwich man’s Twitter quest to find a job

Industry experts have praised the motivation and intuition of a Norwich man who has taken to Twitter to try and find a job.

Mr Wright’s attempts to find a job through Twitter have been praised by a Norwich social media expert.
Gordon Maw, of Maw Communications, based in Earlham Road, said he was not surprised to see someone using Twitter to try and find employment and also said he wouldn’t be surprised if his attempt proved successful.
Mr Maw said: “Good on him. I’m always interested to see Twitter used in different ways, it demonstrates the power of Twitter and how people grab it and re-invent it in their own way.
“This is really the 21st century version of getting on your bike and what people admire about it is that it’s a very honest approach, and people appreciate that.
“The other great thing we find is that people on Twitter tend to be a very positive and helpful community. I’ve done a number of appeals, from plumbers to restaurants, and you are guaranteed that someone will come back to you.
“People want to help with even the most basic needs and there is nothing more pressing then a job.”
Gavin Wright, 43, has taken to micro-blogging website Twitter after becoming exasperated with unemployment.
He has moved his quest online using his @NeedajobNorwich Twitter account and has already had his appeals published to over 50,000 people on the internet.
On the small biography section of his Twitter profile, Mr Wright, of Dereham Road, Norwich, has simply written: “Hi, Im Gav. Will consider any type of work, I’m 43, fit (and) healthy, honest and reliable, Call me 0750 386 5807 former business owner, RT PLZ.”
‘RT’ stands for ‘retweet’, which is a method used by Twitter users to share a post with their followers. Shortly after setting up the account Mr Wright was already seeing his appeals get retweeted but he got some surprise celebrity help to get him on his way.
On Saturday David Gold, co-owner of West Ham United, who Mr Wright supports, retweeted one of his appeals to more than 49,300 of his followers.
Mr Gold, well known for making millions as an entrepreneur despite coming from a working-class London background, also replied to Mr Wright on Twitter, saying: “My family motto is determination perseverance and courage. I am sure that if you remain positive a opportunity will come.”
Mr Wright had been running Wright Distribution, a leaflet delivery company based in Camp Grove, Thorpe Hamlet.
But after that business closed at the end of January this year Mr Wright, who has a six-year-old son, took to the internet to try and fix his problem.
The former Long Stratton High School pupil told the Evening News he was shocked by the big reaction he had.
He said: “It’s gone global, I’ve had people tweeting me from everywhere, it shows the power of Twitter!
“I’ve had tweets from Africa, Cyprus, all over the place. It makes you realise how one small tweet can connect you with the rest of the world.
“The retweet from Mr Gold was massive for me because I am a big West Ham fan and that got me 190 retweets in about 30 seconds, it’s absolutely incredible.”
Mr Wright woke up yesterday to calls from all kinds of media organisations wanting to find out about his Twitter quest, including a radio station in the USA and a journalist working in Japan.
As the web-savvy of the world like to say, his story had gone “viral”.
Mr Wright continued: “I’ve had a of people offer me stuff already but they’re clearly not reading into it properly because it has not been Norwich stuff, and I have family commitments. My little lad, Leo, will be seven in August.
“I’m pretty optimistic that something will come out of this. I’m in the position of ‘beggars can’t be choosers’ but ideally I would like to be working in some sort of marketing. I just want to get back into working though.”
Mr Wright had been running Wright Distribution with his brother, Mark, but said the country’s economic struggles caused the business to wind up.
He added: “I started the business with £15 in 2003 and had three offices, but the housing market had such a huge effect on us.
“We produced a lot of leaflets for estate agents, hundreds and hundreds of them. But the housing market slowing down meant that all basically stopped overnight, the buyers and sellers just weren’t there, it was the knock on effect of that.
“My biggest beef as a person who is unemployed is I walk in to the job centre and say I want to learn a new trade but I’m told I’ve got to be unemployed for three months, or in some cases six months, before I even qualify for training.”
Unemployment in East Anglia fell by 6,000 to a total of 207,000 people in the three months to March, official figures released by the Office of National Statistics in May revealed.
The region’s unemployment rate was 6.7pc and saw a fall of 2.8pc during the period and across the country unemployment fell by 45,000 between January and March, leaving 2.6m people out of work.
Caroline Williams, chief executive of Norfolk Chamber of Commerce, praised Mr Wright’s efforts, saying: “I haven’t heard of anybody using Twitter to find a job before. Linked In is used quite extensively, especially in London.
“But employers want individuals who are motivated, inventive and willing to think outside the box, so anything an individual can do to get themselves known is a good thing.
“The economy is tough and challenging so this is an interesting concept. Of course you need followers on Twitter for it to be a success but the key message is, if you are struggling, do something outside the box to get yourself noticed.”
