A PROPOSAL to transform a dilapidated Victorian station into a daytime café and evening takeaway has been submitted to the district council.

The plans for the former railway office at Bricket Wood Station consist of transforming the interior into a café serving snacks by day and an Indian takeaway by night.

Minor alterations are proposed for the exterior of the historic building, such as new windows, a fire exit, a ventilation chute and an illuminated sign.

Two applications have been submitted by Hakim Uddin of Dellfield, St Albans - one for the change of use and the second for the external signage.

Acting on behalf of Mr Uddin, Robi Miah of Luton-based Home Design Consultants, said: "We are trying to help that area of the community preserve a building of architectural significance - it's a shame that it's been allowed to get the way it is at the moment."

He continued: "We want to bring it back to life but we realise the importance of keeping the heritage. We want to preserve the building but also provide a service within the area."

David Horton, a member of the Abbey Flyer Users Group, explained that the idea to regenerate the station and bring it into use was voiced around five years ago.

He recently met with local residents at the station to discuss what they would most like to see the station used for and the ideas included a local heritage centre.

Mr Horton said: "Local residents had already got together and discussed what they would like to see the station used for and any future proposals will rest on the outcome of this application. If it isn't successful we have a few other ideas up our sleeves."

St Stephen parish councillor Trevor Gurd said: "We would like to see the station preserved for the future and used for a use appropriate to the nature and age of the building.
