A month after it opened for business the future for Harwood Flooring is looking as green as the artificial grass it supplies.
Its new business premises in Beccles Road, Bradwell, opened officially on August 19 – a big day for Liam Harwood, his wife Kerry and shop manager Gareth Castle.
Harwood Flooring specialises in hard flooring, including wood, laminate and luxury vinyl tiles and is an approved retailer for Karndean Design Flooring.
The shop offers a wide range of carpet and sheet vinyl and Harwood Flooring is also an approved installer for the British made TigerTurf artificial grass.
Liam said early interest in the new business had been high: “It has been promising, with week on week increases in estimate and fitting appointments,” he said.
“Customer feedback has been very positive with a number of repeat bookings already taken.”
Gareth said that after the first month’s trading, 65pc of customers they have visited to give a free estimate to have since been booked in or had work completed, in what he described as “a really positive start”.
It was the signs of a recovery in the economy and the discovery of the right premises that prompted Liam – who had spent his working life as a fitter/estimator in the flooring industry – to launch his own venture.
“I have vast experience working in the industry, having been involved in my dad’s flooring business from an early age in both Caister and Lowestoft,” said Liam who has a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Floorcovering Occupations.
“In recent years, I have been working on a self-employed basis fitting flooring for Guys Carpets. I am well respected in the area for a high quality of work.”
Liam added: “We are a family business which aims to provide quality flooring products, competitive prices and quality service to both domestic and commercial customers.
“While we have a number of competitors in the area, our location in Bradwell on a main road, with private customer parking, gives us something different.”
Gareth added that their choice of supplier also marked them out.
“We do pride ourselves on having British manufactured goods in store wherever possible,” he said.
The company has seen an encouraging number of bookings for artificial grass work since opening, and are expecting increased interest in this labour-saving product in coming years.
“It is not cheap to install, because the ‘base’ work is labour intensive, with a lot of work involved to ensure there is a suitable hard wearing base on which the artificial grass is laid upon.
“However, TigerTurf grass does come with an eight-year guarantee and is becoming increasing popular, for those with children and pets,” said Gareth.
Like any new business, Harwood Flooring has encountered problems; having to wait six weeks to open the shop after taking out the lease was a blow.
But the business has benefited from the support and advice of NWES which has helped overcome these early obstacles.
Liam said: “As a new start business, the advice we have received from NWES has been really beneficial and opened our eyes to a number of things we had not even considered in terms of networking and planning.
“Jessica, our business adviser, has been readily available if we needed anything.”
