Announcing his departure Eliza O’Toole, chairman of Great Yarmouth Port Company - whose trading name is EastPort UK, said: “We have always known that Jamie’s heart was in the container terminal sector of the ports industry, from where he came to us, and while we are sincerely sorry to lose him we wish him every success in his new role in that sector as senior asset manager of the London container terminal at Tilbury.

“Since Jamie has been in post he has built a strong and cohesive team at the port and prioritised with great success relationships with all our local stakeholders and customers. We will miss his straightforward approach and deep operational knowledge.2

Mr Frater took up his post in May 2012, succeeding Eddie Freeman who quit to pursue other interests.

At the time of his appointment he revealed his ambitions to create jobs and finally realise the port’s potential.

He said while offshore was his main focus he was open to a ferry link-up or talks with shipping lines over becoming a container port.
