A snooker club which has been in Fakenham for 20 years could be redeveloped into a restaurant and offices.

There are hopes, however, that snooker will remain in the town.

A change of use application for The Pot Black Club, on Oak Street, has been submitted to North Norfolk District Council.

A proposal has been put forward for five units of mixed use of retail, financial and professional services and a restaurant, cafe and hot food takeaway.

Alan Townsend, manager of The Pot Black Club, said: 'I hope we can keep the snooker club open, in a smaller form, in part of the new development.

'The club is still quite busy.

'Snooker is not as popular as it used to be but we also have thriving darts and pool teams here as well.

'We have a lease on the building until August so nothing is going to happen straight away and hopefully we have time to sort something out with the landlord.'

Fakenham mayor Adrian Vertigan, who is also chairman of the community group Kick Start Fakenham, which works to promote the town, said: 'It would be a shame to lose a facility like that in Fakenham.

'At the same time, investment and new retail units could bring new life to that part of the town.'

He added: 'With the redevelopment of the burned-out former Aldiss building in the Market Place due to take place next year, I think 2016 could be an exciting year for Fakenham.'
