As part of our regular series of profiles on the region’s Young Farmers’ Club (YFC) members, HARRIET GREEN talks about her role in the financial side of agriculture.
I have worked at Larking Gowen for more than three years, starting after I completed my A-levels.
The firm trains individuals for a number of accountancy qualifications, which creates opportunities for personal development and a variety of potential future career paths. I began as an AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) trainee on an apprenticeship scheme.
As an accounts assistant based in the agriculture department I am involved in the financial aspects of many farming businesses. At this time of year we are busy preparing end-of-year accounts, bookkeeping, submitting VAT returns and planning for the year going forward, based on the budget.
This job can be particularly varied. For example, one day I can be doing bookkeeping and the next day I could be organising seminars. In addition to this we are at the end of the phone should clients have a query or need advice regarding tax planning, payroll, or succession.
I love working in agriculture, primarily because farming is my passion. I was brought up on a farm and
I wished to continue my link with agriculture. Through my job I am able to fulfil this ambition as I am talking to farmers on a daily basis on things that affect them both within the industry and financially.
Within the farming industry there is a strong sense of community. This I have really learned through being a member of Young Farmers, and the activities that are carried out throughout the year. The commitment and teamwork has enabled me to take part in activities such as public speaking, which is something that I would never have done in the past. This gives me the confidence when approaching new challenges both within my role as the secretary for Diss YFC and within my job.
In five years, I would like to be a qualified bookkeeper and still involved with Young Farmers. To be able to meet up with like-minded people on a weekly basis and the variety of opportunities provided by Young Farmers is very important to me.
