A Suffolk-based farming co-op boss is set to take part in a gruelling charity cycle ride from Lands End to John O’Groats.

Averaging 76 miles a day over 15 days, four cyclists, Fram Farmers chief executive Richard Anscombe, Richard Pither, Paul Goulding and Gordon Brock. from Diss CTC, part of Cycling UK, will take to the road in September on a self-funded trip in aid of Bowel Cancer UK, Prostate Cancer UK, Dementia UK and Village Water. A fourth member of the team, Helen Lowell, will be driving a support vehicle.

The idea of the ride came out of a conversation between the two Richards during one of their regular Sunday rides at Diss CTC.

“We are told that the first two and a half days are the hardest of the entire journey, given the steepness of the hills in Cornwall and Devon, so we are very much in at the deep end from the first morning,” said Richard Anscombe.

“We are intent on enjoying the trip, tough though it will be. Cycling is a great way to see the countryside, so we have planned the daily distances to take in the sights as we travel, as opposed to grinding out 100 plus miles a day, which I’m sure would take away the enjoyment for all of us.

“Averaging 76 miles for two weeks will still be a tough challenge, but I am confident that we will make it and manage to enjoy the experience at the same time.”
