Red Tractor pig farmers will be serving up free bacon and sausage sandwiches in Norwich on Monday to thank consumers for supporting the industry at a time of crisis.

Residents and workers in the City centre can log onto to www.facebook.com/lovepork.uk to vote on whether Norwich gets sausage or bacon sarnies and request a free delivery of up to five sandwiches.

The Red Tractor team aims to provide as many free bacon rolls as possible and they will be handing them out in the centre of the city.

It is the latest stop in a national road show, which will take in 19 cities. Farmer’s son and former England rugby star, Phil Vickery is also backing the promotion.

Pig farmers have seen production costs soar as drought around the world has forced up feed prices. Many are losing £12 per finished pig.

Consumers have said they are prepared to support farmers and pay a little bit more for meat from pigs produced by responsible farmers including those in the Red Tractor scheme.

“All the indications are that pork, bacon and sausages, like other foods will go up in price over the coming months. We wanted to say a big thanks to shoppers in Norwich for sticking with us and giving out free bacon and sausages sandwiches seemed like the natural way to do it,” said Richard Longthorp, chairman of the National Pig Association.

The campaign has been supported by many Norfolk MPs. Elizabeth Truss, who represents south west Norfolk, said: “Pig production is worth an estimated £580m to East Anglia. Supporting over 1000 jobs in the region it is vital that we ensure the long term sustainability of the industry.”

Chloe Smith, MP for Norwich North, said: “We have amazing local pork in Norfolk. Buy local and show your support. The Red Tractor logo helps guarantee you high standards from the farm to the supermarket - or to the roadshow in this case!”

Broadland MP Keith Simpson, added: “I would like to express my full support for our pig farmers who produce such high quality food here in Norfolk and are an important part of our local food industry. I urge everyone to buy Red Tractor pork.”
