A smart technology firm was the shining star in the EDP Business Awards Enviro-technologies category.

Enlight, based in Loddon, designs and manufactures street lamps and technology for lighting infrastructure which monitor environmental conditions and upload data and information through a wireless platform.

Its suite of measuring software covers physical aspects including temperature, movement and water level, which are integrated using an intelligent data processing controller.

The established family firm claims its 'internet of things' technology can reduce customers' energy consumption and costs by 50%.

Local government organisations, retail park operators, hospitals and highways operators have all made use of its technology, with notable clients including Hethel Engineering Centre and BT, where car park lighting was retrofitted, and Cambridge tech giant Arm Holdings.

Enlight's product suite was praised by the judges for its innovation in design and execution, with its internal computer allowing the user to extract information from the monitors – such as predicting when rising water levels could cause flooding at the monitor site – rather than just data.

Chief technical officer David Aarons, who founded the company with his father almost two decades ago, said its energy efficient technology was the 'spark' which kickstarted its journey.

Following a successful project to retrofit the street lighting in Loddon, organised with the local authority, the firm's technology is going global.

'It is a good demonstration of how regional companies can pioneer a government initiative that now goes around the world,' said Mr Aarons.

'A lot of people do innovation and come up with new technology, but it is really about listening to what people need and aligning technology with those needs.

'By listening you understand how to make a good product, because you find the 'what' and the 'why' and we work out the 'how'.'

The Enviro-technologies award, sponsored by Paul Robinson Partnership, recognises the green pioneers and innovators in Norfolk who are leading the way in their use of environmentally friendly practices.
