The winner of the EDP Business Awards 2017 Skills of Tomorrow award helps young people across the region access jobs and opportunities they would not otherwise be able to.

Kickstart Norfolk, based in Dereham, identified one of the biggest barriers to young people finding jobs and further education was a lack of transport and set out to fix the problem through a moped hire scheme.

It beat social enterprise Your Own Place and estate agency Arnolds Keys to win the category, sponsored by Indigo Swan.

Since 1996 the charity has supported more than 4,000 young people across Norfolk and has been able to grow in size since receiving funding in 2001.

Kickstart manager Dale Curtis said: “In the last year we have expanded somewhat and this award will enhance what we do by proving to different agencies and investors that what we are doing is working and it is exactly what we need.

“We have been going 21 years and we have done a lot of good work in that time but in the last few years we have really been pushing forward with apprenticeships and helping young people see the opportunities out there for them.”

The judges said: “Kickstart embodies what the Skills of Tomorrow Award is all about.

“It is providing the opportunity for the young people of our region to access job opportunities and further education that they wouldn’t be able to source without this project.

“Kickstart is the platform for gaining the skills of tomorrow whilst also nurturing the skills of today.”
