Briston-based butchers win Holt Budgens supplier of the year award

A north Norfolk supermarket has handed out its annual “oscars” to its local suppliers.

Budgens of Holt prided itself on buying from producers in the area said managing director Mike Baker.

When his company CT Baker took over the store six years ago there was none, but now it spent £600,000 in the local economy which “previously went out of north Norfolk,” he told 63 guests at suppliers awards dinner.

The store also ran a Love Local charity campaign which supported 11 projects on its doorstep with grants of up £450. Both factors helped it win the Budgens national community retailer of the year award against competition from more than 195 stores, he added.

“We treat our business relationship as a partnership. We support you with regular orders, regular advertising in the EDP featuring you, and pay you on time with a realistic price. In turn we expect first quality products, good service and promotions.”

The winner of this year’s awards, whose name goes on an honours board in the store, is H V Graves - a Briston-based family butchery firm, dating back to 1947 which has also branched out into bakery and greengrocery.

Paul Graves, who collected the award, said they were proud to win the award. Their products include beef from a 10 mile-radius. Their four shops include one inside the store at Holt.

Runners sup were Cornerways Tomatoes from Wissington near Stoke Ferry, whose produce is grown using heat recycled from the nearby sugar factory, and family-run Pointen’s Dairies from Briston who provide milk cream and ice cream.

The event was held at the Feathers Hotel and featured a menu using local produce. A raffle raised £250 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance.
