Smiths News is renaming itself Connect Group in a move that will create three new divisions within the organisation: Connect News and Media, Connect Books, and Connect Education & Care.

However, the company confirmed that businesses within the group – including Bertrams – will not undergo a name change. It came as the firm said it remained focused on delivering 50pc of operating profit outside of newspaper and magazine wholesaling by 2016.

Mark Cashmore, group chief executive, said: “Our new name and company identity is a landmark change for the group. Since 2006 we have made substantial progress in growing market share and successfully diversifying in to new sectors and markets.

“This change will allow us to retain our existing brands and their customer relationships whilst providing a clear and unifying structure to the organisation as we continue to enhance shareholder value.”
