The holidaying habits of Norfolk consumers appears to have staved off widespread closures of Thomas Cook travel agents in the county.

The beleagured Travel Agent this week unveiled plans to close 195 travel agents and axe around 2,500 jobs.

But it has now confirmed that only one outlet - its Co-operative Travel store in Market Place Great Yarmouth is to close with the jobs of four staff at risk.

However its remaining outlets in the town are not affected and it also means that stores in Norwich, King’s Lynn, Diss, Fakenham, and Lowestoft have also been spared.

However six outlets in Suffolk and Essex are to set close including Abbeygate Street in Bury St Edmunds.

And 300 workers at its Peterborough headquarters are also waiting to find out if there jobs are to go as a 90 day consultation process gets underway.

Thomas Cook said that any bookings in the closure-marked stores would be transferred to other stores.

The EDP understands that store profitability played a part in the decision, while other factors considered were the number of stores in close proximity to each other, and the expiry date of leases.

Joanna Wild, managing director of the Thomas Cook Co-operative retail network, said: “As a large retailer we regularly review our network to make sure we have the right stores in the right places for our customers and regrettably there are occasions where we need to close certain branches. “We’d like to thank both our colleagues and customers for the commitment and understanding during this process. Our high street stores are a popular way for customers to book with us and are an essential part of our multi-channel approach alongside our websites and sales centres.”

I am surprised that the Norwich store has survived, from experience the staff are inexperienced and from thier advice caused my daughter to have the honeymoon from hell. Even after the Thomas Cook rep in the resort changed her hotel on arrival because ot the conditions of this establishment, Thomas Cook did not want to know

Another one bites the dust. Truly desperate in GY now, dreadful incomers, druggies, crime soaring, fraught locals trying to make the best of an awful situation.And to cap it all everywhere is covered in gull sh*t again. Anyone want to buy a house, sensible offers considered...
