Abellio Greater Anglia launches customer service apprenticeship scheme

Young people interested in a career in the railway have been urged to apply for a new customer service scheme at a regional travel group.

Abellio Greater Anglia is launching its new customer service apprenticeship scheme in January, initially recruiting a team of 10 people in Norfolk between 18 and 23.

The apprentices, who will receive one-to-one training while working in the company’s customer service department at Norwich, will take part in a 12-month programme where they will work towards a Level 2 NVQ.

Andrew Goodrum, customer service director at Abellio Greater Anglia, said: “We are very pleased to be offering these new apprenticeships. This customised training course will offer a range of transferable skills.

“We already operate a very successful engineering apprenticeship programme and this new scheme will help strengthen our customer service department. The railway is a great place to work with a wealth of opportunities and fantastic benefits. We look forward to welcoming our new apprentices.”

Although the jobs will be based in Norwich, the apprentices will be expected to work across East Anglia.

The training programme will see the new recruits join the company’s customer service team and, as well as gaining experience of core customer service roles, spend time with the customer relations, revenue protection, catering, train presentation and fleet maintenance teams.

Abellio said the apprentices would be paid significantly above the national minimum wage.

The group said the initiative complemented the Norwich for Jobs campaign, which aims to reduce youth unemployment in the city and surrounding areas and, if successful, the company would look at options for extending it.

  • If you do the job properly in the first place you don't need so many 'Customer Service' people. However, I can see it now, 3000 apply for the roles. 100 are asked to come for an interview. Only 4 actually manage to turn up. 3 of those are for the wrong job or a day late. The other 1 turns up in their pyjamas.
