Electronics Engineer
Answers supplied by Anthony Whales, an apprentice
electronics engineer with Archant Print. Archant have two
main printing divisions locally, one in Ipswich and one at
Thorpe, which boasts the most up-to-date printing equipment
in the area. The Thorpe site prints both daily and weekly
newspapers and among the titles printed are the Evening News,
Eastern Daily Press and Ilford Recorder.
What does the job entail?
The main function of the job is to use corrective, preventative
measures on equipment (in our case the electronics equipment
in the press centre). It also involves the repair and maintenance
of the equipment to try to avoid disruption to production
through technical problems.
What skills and qualifications are
needed?
Experience can be gained while still at school through work
experience or through an apprenticeship course. You will need
to aim for a minimum of 5 GCESs grade C and above. After four
years you can also achieve an ONC and then progress to a HNC.
There is also the option of doing a degree.
What type of person will fit in?
The ideal person will be able to work in a team as well as
using their initiative. In this type of environment it helps
to be sociable and you will also need to be confident and
able to make decisions.
What are the pluses and minuses of the job?
Irregular and unsociable hours are the downside to the position.
However, there are good career prospects, a good salary and
the chance to progress.
What opportunities exist for career
progression?
You will be able to be involved with new technology as it
becomes available and could have the opportunity of promotion
to supervisor or chief engineer.
What can I expect to earn?
Starting salary is £15,000 and can go up to £40,000
for a chief engineer. This would obviously vary from company
to company and in different areas of the country.
