What does the job entail?
Having a detailed knowledge of general insurance from new business, policy changes and renewals — working with insurance companies to find the best solutions for customers. Customer service is at the heart of this profession, treating people as we would like to be treated ourselves. A desire to help the customers and provide a good service is essential.

What skills and qualifications are needed?
Real life skills are probably the most important — having the ability to communicate with clear, logical thinking and the desire to take responsibility in the job. Experience in insurance or a similar professional arena is desirable and, once you are working within the industry, there are plenty of opportunities to develop your skills further. As you are considering entering the industry, or even once you are working within it, try looking out for personal development courses in related subjects such as communication, which would enhance your skills base. Such courses are run at Norwich City College and are also available as online courses.

What type of person will fit in?
Anyone who is serious about work, with a professional and friendly attitude towards giving genuinely good service. The great thing is that people of any age and type can enjoy this job and get so much out of it, because they are dealing with people from different walks of life every day. It would suit mums returning to work, those taking early retirement or looking for a career change later in life.

What are the pluses and minuses of the job?

This is a major growth industry, especially in the Norfolk region. There are plenty of great chances to get on in the job, with the opportunity to work alongside some of the very best people. The industry is fast-moving and you can wonder where your working day has gone when things get really busy. Companies often have pleasant working conditions and it is employment within a dynamic, modern environment.

What opportunities exist for career progression?
Very often progression is internal, so there are many opportunities to move into other areas — for example in training, coaching, management, IT, marketing and finance.

What can I expect to earn?
Depending on experience, annual salaries usually start between £9,500 and £13,000. Some companies, such as its4me, also offer a good pension scheme, incentive and bonus schemes.

Any hints on getting a job in this area?
If you have previous or similar experience, that helps, but it is not essential. If you’re articulate and you like dealing with people, that is a good start. Carrying out some web research on similar companies in the area is worthwhile or keep an eye on the local press for companies advertising vacancies; its4me is currently recruiting — for further details please contact Lisa on (01603) 221014, ckeck out the recruitment section of the Evening News or visit the website on www.its4me.co.uk
