Police officer

Answers supplied by Shelley Jackson, recruitment officer, from the Norfolk Constabulary which employs 1,500 police officers and 1,000 police staff. Their aim is to keep Norfolk safe.

What does the job entail?
The role is varied and includes patrolling, criminal investigations, creating and maintaining links with the community and other aspects of police work to detect and prevent crime, injuries and disorder. In Norfolk, with its urban and rural settings and its range of commercial and agricultural activities and its Royal residence, there are opportunities for police officers to contribute in various roles.

What skills and qualifications are needed?

No formal academic qualifications are needed, but you need to have achieved a good educational standard. Candidates are required to complete a Police National Competency Based Application Form and Police National Assessment Centre. There are no height restrictions, but there is an eyesight standard requirement. You should be physically fit with no serious health problems.

What type of person will fit in?
People who are between 18 and a half and 49 with good character, excellent communication and people skills, who can act on their own initiative, make sound judgements and be accountable for their actions and decisions.

What are the pluses and minuses of the job?
No day is the same, which makes the job varied and interesting, however, elements of the job are unpleasant and require a strong constitution.

What opportunities exist for career progression?
All police officers start their careers as constables and must pass qualifying
exams if they wish to progress to the ranks of sergeant and inspector. There are a variety of opportunities to choose from within the constabulary. Some choose to move to one of the many specialist roles, while others aim
for promotion. The High Potential Development Scheme, a fast track progression scheme for reaching higher ranks, is available for those who are ambitious and display the necessary qualities. Norfolk Constabulary aims to offer support and advice to help officers to achieve their full potential.

What can I expect to earn?
Starting salary is £20,397 rising to £22,770 after successful completion of the 32-week initial training. The current top salary for a police constable with 10 years service is £32,025 per annum.
