Why visit the Norfolk Careers Fair
- Many local companies from a range of industry sectors will be there looking to recruit the right kind of people for their organisation
- By talking to people from various industries it can allow you to explore your career options if you are unsure of the area you wish to work in
- It is a chance for you to meet employers face to face and a good opportunity for you to ask any questions that you may have about their organisation or field of work
- Nothing replaces making an in-person first impression, it is a very good opportunity to 'sell' yourself
- You can pass your CV directly to prospective employers
What you should do before attending
- Know why you want to attend
- Identify which companies will be there and draw up a "hit list" of those that you want to visit
- Dress appropriately and professionally - make a positive first impression before you even say anything
- Know what you want to say, prepare to ask the right questions and be asked questions in return
- 'Market' yourself - have a 'brief' speech about yourself prepared in your mind, state your purpose - make sure you don't ramble or waste exhibitors' time
- Greet people with confidence and enthusiasm, smile, make eye contact, stand up straight, don't fidget, speak clearly, don't chew gum, have a firm hand shake
- Have an open mind
CV Advice
Content typically contains:
- Personal details (address, telephone number, email address, nationality, date of birth)
- Work experience (list the most recent first)
- Education (list brief details of qualifications)
- References (provide name & contact details of two referees - make sure that you ask their permission to do so)
- Hobbies (your interests away from the workplace)
Try to have several versions of your CV which are tailored to suit different objectives.
Other things to consider:
- Sell yourself but do not over exaggerate your skills
- Do not say negative things about yourself - concentrate on the things that you can do, rather than those that you can't
- Be careful about what abbreviations you use as these can easily be misunderstood
- Avoid long sentences - use short sentences and bullet points
- Check thoroughly for spelling and grammatical errors
- Keep to a maximum of 2 pages where possible, one A4 sheet is much quicker to scan
- Print it out using a laser printer on good quality paper
