1970-71 |
Peter Silvester
and Kenny Foggo score 15 goals apiece but Ron Saunders
reshaped side can only finish 10th in Division Two.
A 5-1 thrashing at Wolves in the third round of
the FA Cup makes it a particularly low-key campaign.
Finished: 10th out of 22 in Division Two |

1971-72 |
A
season to remember! The Canaries reach the half-way
stage with just one defeat to their name and clinch
promotion to the top flight for the first time in
their history in their penultimate game with a 2-1
victory at Orient. A 1-1 draw at Watford in the
following game means they go up as champions.
No joy in the FA Cup Hull win 3-0 at Carrow
Road but City reach quarter-finals of the
League Cup before losing to Chelsea.
Finished: 1st out of 22 in Division Two |

1972-73 |
Draw first game in Division
One 1-1 with Everton, Jimmy Bone scoring the historic
goal, but later go 19 games without a win to drop
into the relegation zone. Dave Stringers late
winner against fellow strugglers Crystal Palace
helps them to safety with one match to spare. City
reach two finals, only to lose them both
going down 1-0 in extra-time to Tottenham in the
League Cup at Wembley and losing 4-2 to Ipswich
on aggregate in the Texaco Cup.
Finished: 20th out of 22 in Division One |

1973-74 |
Geoffrey Watling
steps down as chairman to be placed by Arthur South
and then Saunders quits after a 3-1 home defeat
by Everton. John Bond is the new manager and brings
in two proven goalscorers in the shape of Ted MacDougall
and Phil Boyer but City are still relegated. A good
run in the League club ends with a semi-final defeat
at the hands of Wolves while Arsenal quickly end
interest in the FA Cup.
Finished: 22nd out of 22 in Division One |

1974-75 |
City go straight back up, finishing
in third place behind Manchester United and Aston
Villa. The inspired £50,000 capture of Martin
Peters (pictured) from Spurs helps see them over
the line with promotion achieved at Portsmouth where
the Canaries win 3-0. Another final appearance in
the League Cup ends in disappointment City
lose 1-0 to Villa at Wembley while Coventry
win a third round FA Cup tie at Highfield Road.
Finished: 3rd out of 22 in Division Two |
 |
1975-76 |
New seats in the South Stand
cause controversy off the pitch but on it City settle
down well in Division One, finishing in 10th place.
Highlights include two hat-tricks for MacDougall
in the space of four games and a 3-1 win at eventual
champions Liverpool. The undoubted low point is
a home defeat at the hands of Fourth Division Bradford
City in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Finished: 10th out of 22 in Division One |

1976-77 |
Ted
MacDougall departs for Southampton for £50,000
and Kevin Reeves (pictured right) is signed for
the same sum from Bournemouth to replace him. City
finish 13th in the league and bow out of the FA
Cup 5-2 at Leeds. Rioting Manchester United fans
cause unprecedented havoc at Carrow Road during
the league game on April 2.
Finished: 16th out of 22 in Division One |
 |
| 1977-78 |
City win first away game of
the season 3-1 at West Ham but dont win on
travels again and finish 13th in the table. No joy
in the cups either as Orient win a third-round
replay at Carrow Road in the FA Cup and Burnley
make it an almost equally swift farewell to the
League Cup after a replay.
Finished: 13th out of 22 in Division One |
 |
| 1978-79 |
John Bonds side set a
club record by drawing 23 of their 42 matches, including
seven in a row, to finish 16th. Another early exit
in the FA Cup, 3-0 at Leicester, prompts Bond to
put prized summer signing Martin Chivers on the
transfer list and put teenage debutant Justin Fashanu
in his place for the next match. Manchester City
end League Cup progress with a 3-1 fourth round
win at Carrow Road. Work starts on the building
of the new River End stand.
Finished: 16th out of 22 in Division One |
 |
| 1979-80 |
Three victories
at the start of the season see City top the table
but it doesnt last and they finish
12th. Kevin Keelan plays the last of the 673 games
in the 5-3 defeat by Liverpool, a match famous for
Justin Fashanus goal of the season. Wolves
end FA Cup hopes in fourth round while Liverpool
come out on top 3-1 in a League Cup quarter-final
at Carrow Road.
