| A century of the Canaries . .
. 1960-70 |
 |
1960-61 |
City take well to their new
surroundings and make a bright start to the season.
They cant keep pace with East Anglian neighbours
Ipswich, who go on to reach the top flight for the
first time under Alf Ramsey and win it the
following season. But the Canaries eventually finish
a highly commendable fourth while theres also
a decent run in the FA Cup before Sunderland win
1-0 at Carrow Road in the fifth round.
Finished: 4th out of 22 in Division Three South

1961-62 |
Theres an early shock
as Archie Macaulay leaves in mid-season to go and
manage first division West Brom. Scotsman Willie
Reid takes over and City go on to win the recently
created League Cup, beating Rochdale 4-1 over two
legs in the final. The Canaries again reach the
fifth round of the FA Cup this time Sheffield
United end their dreams but can only finish
17th in the league. Reid moves on just eight days
after the League Cup triumph and former Arsenal
keeper George Swindin is brought in to replace him.
Finished: 17th out of 22 in Division Three South

1962-63 |
After just 20 games in charge
George Swindin quits to take over as manager of
Cardiff City. The Canaries are going well at the
time but fade to finish 11th one place behind
Swindins Bluebirds under the guidance
of caretaker player-manager Ron Ashman. An all-time
record home crowd of 43,984 watches a 2-0 defeat
at the hands of Leicester in the quarter-finals
of the FA Cup.
Finished: 11th out of 24 in Division Three South |

1963-64 |
Caretaker
boss Ron Ashman is given the managers job
full-time and makes his presence felt by bringing
in two greats Ron Davies (right) and Kevin
Keelan for £35,000 and £6,500
respectively. Davies goals help City keep
away from the relegation zone but a poor run at
the end of the season sees them finish a disappointing
17th in the table. Bristol Rovers win 2-1 at Carrow
Road in the third round of the FA Cup.
Finished: 11th out of 22 in Division Two

1964-65 |
City improve to
finish sixth in the table in a season that sees
young defender Dave Stringer (pictured left) make
his debut. They again go out of the FA Cup in the
third round, this time to Nottingham Forest.
Finished: 6th out of 22 in Division Two |

1965-66 |
April
9 1966 is a black day. Stalwart defender Barry Butler
(pictured right) dies in a car crash at the age
of 31 and the whole club is thrown into mourning.
The clubs player of the year trophy is named
in his honour. City finish 13th and are beaten by
Blackburn in the fifth round of the FA Cup and Ashman
leaves Carrow Road after more than 20 years sterling
service. Lol Morgan is the new boss.
Finished: 13th out of 22 in Division Two |

1966-67 |
There is uproar as star striker
Ron Davies is allowed to leave to join Southampton
for only £55,000. But, thanks in no small
part to 16 goals in 27 games from new-boy Lawrie
Sheffield (pictured), City hold their own, ending
up in 11th position. The major drama is reserved
for the FA Cup where the Canaries record a superb
2-1 victory at Old Trafford against a title-bound
Manchester United side including Charlton, Best
and Law but go on to lose 3-1 at home to
Sheffield Wednesday in the fifth round.
Finished: 11th out of 22 in Division Two

 |
1967-68 |
Another big FA Cup
match sees City lost 1-0 at Chelsea in the fourth
round in front of nearly 60,000 fans at Stamford
Bridge. In the league its a steady rather
than spectacular season with a ninth place finish
at the end of it.
Finished: 9th out of 22 in Division Two |
 |
1968-69 |
A 4-2 win at Ipswich in the
second round of the League Cup is the highlight
of a generally low-key campaign. West Brom beat
City 3-0 in the third round of the FA Cup and the
Canaries struggle in the league, eventually finishing
13th. Manager Lol Morgan (pictured) resigns after
the 4-1 home defeat at hands of Derby on April 16.
Finished: 13th out of 22 in Division Two |
 |
1969-70 |
Former Oxford United
boss Ron Saunders is charged with reviving Norwichs
fortunes but his first season isnt
a particularly memorable one. The Canaries can only
finish 11th in the league and go out of both cup
competitions at the first time of asking.
