Charles OHagan succeeds
Buckley as City prepare for their first season in
the Football League. They draw their opening match
1-1 at Plymouth and finish just below half way in
Division Three South. OHagan resigns in mid-season,
to be replaced by Albert Gosnell. Joe Hannah, who
went on to make 427 appearances, makes debut.

1921-1922 |
Albert Gosnells first
full season in charge sees City playing in a new
strip of yellow and green stripes. Several new players
arrive but cant help their new side finish
any higher than 15th in what is now Division Three
South. Good FA Cup run ends with a 2-1 replay defeat
to First Division Barnsley at The Nest..

The clubs annual meeting
hears that Citys finances are not in a good
shape and its no better on the pitch.
City finish in 18th place and go out to Bolton in
the first round of the FA Cup. Albert Dennison scores
the clubs first hat-trick in league football.

Former England international
Albert Sturgess arrives from Sheffield United to
become Citys oldest debutant at 39. He helps
his new team to their best league finish so far,
11th.

1924-1925 |
Another unremarkable season
sees City finish 12th in the league and lose 4-0
at Notts County in the second round of the cup.

1925-1926 |
With City struggling near the
foot of the table, having gone out of the Cup to
amateurs Clapton, Albert Gosnell resigns and is
replaced by James Stansfield.
Finished: 16th out of 22 in Division Three South

1926-1927 |
Stansfield quits after a 7-1
defeat at Crystal Palace and popular pre-war player
Cecil Potter takes over. He helps steady the ship
with City again finishing 16th and reaching the
third round of the FA Cup.

1927-1928 |
Fans
discover a new hero as striker Percy Varco (right)
scores 10 goals in his first eight games to take
City to the top of the table for their first time
in their history. Cries of Give it to Varco
are heard all season as the Cornishman finds the
target on no fewer than 32 occasions. But City fade
badly to finish 17th and lose 6-0 at Luton in the
FA Cup.

A poor start ends with Cecil
Potter resigning after a 5-0 home defeat at the
hands of amateurs Corinthians in the FA Cup. New
man in charge James Kerr masterminds a late recovery
with four wins in the last six matches hoisting
his side to 17th.
Finished: 17th our of 22 in Division Three South

City record their record win
(10-2 against Coventry) on their way to an encouraging
eighth place. Thomas Hunt contributes 25 goals in
29 games, including five against the Sky Blues,
who knocked City out of the cup.
