postcard from Reepham

Reepham

Reepham is an attractive and historic market town situated between the Bure and Wensum valleys. Ian Clarke discovers what is has to offer.

Please note that the postcard from series ended in 2004 and that descriptions of shops and services were correct at time of going to press

Where is it:

Reepham is about 11 miles north west of Norwich, 14 miles south west of Cromer and 10 miles north east of Dereham. It is on the B1145 road.

What's the population:

There are about 1200 households

Best-known landmarks:

St Mary’s Church and St Michael’s Church. At one time three churches stood in the churchyard. St Mary’s is now the single parish church. St Michael’s, although consecrated, is mainly used as a community building. The third church was burned down in 1543. The Market Place contains a variety of interesting buildings. The market was founded in 1277 when Sir John de Vaux obtained a charter from King Edward I for a weekly market. The current market place is mainly 18th century. The Old Brewery House is a listed Georgian building built in 1729 and originally named The Dial House. The Kings Arms is thought to be 16th century and was formerly a coaching inn.

Defining moment in history:

The Great Fire of Reepham in 1543. It had been a minor centre for pilgrimage in the later middle ages due to a statue of the Virgin Mary. The fire devastated many buildings which were constructed with revenue from pilgrims.
