Where is it?
Sprawling across two counties, from Swaffham to Culford this is
the biggest lowland pine forest in the UK. One of Norfolk’s
biggest visitor attractions it was originally created 80 years ago
to supply a chronic demand for timber.
What’s
so special about it?
Well, as forests go it’s pretty impressive and there are
so many bits to choose from – King’s Forest, West Stow,
Santon Downham, Lynford Arboretum and Lakes. Take your pick. Lynford
Arboretum was once part of the Lynford Estate – the Hall is
now a hotel and conference centre. Around 200 tree species are here
and in autumn it’s a blaze of reds, golds and browns. Deer,
red squirrels, bats, adders and great crested newts and rare birds
like the nightjar and woodlark have made their home here.
Go APE! on the high wire in Thetford Forest
A good place for families?
One of the best and a big attraction is the new Go Ape high ropes
course at High Lodge. Those who enjoy an adrenalin rush can swing
and fly through the treetops – great fun if you’re not
afraid of heights. But you must be at least 4ft 7 inches to use it
and at least 10 years old (under 18s must also be accompanied by
an adult). If that’s too scary there’s also an adventure
playground, with Giant Play Sculpture Trail, ideal for younger children.
Cyclists have a choice between two six-mile family trails or a black
route for more experienced riders. Outdoor concerts have become
a summer tradition and there’s also open-air Shakespeare.
At Christmas several events for children are held.
Where can we eat?
High Lodge’s new visitor centre, with its traditional oak-frame
building, has a great restaurant and cafeteria serving home-made
food. If you’d rather do it yourself there are plenty of picnic
sites dotted across the site and you can also hire barbecues.
Anywhere interesting nearby?
High Lodge stands between Thetford and Brandon, both of which
have enough history and amenities to be worth a visit. In the summer
you can enjoy boat trips on the river at Brandon.Thetford boasts
the impressive Castle Mount, priory ruins and the Ancient House
Museum.
What are the costs?
The Forest Drive is open all year with gates unlocked at 9am.
They close at 4pm, autumn and winter and 7pm in spring and summer.
Visitors pay a toll at the entrance, currently £3.50 per car,
but you can get a season ticket for £17.50. High Lodge visitor
centre is on the B1107 Thetford to Brandon Road. For directions
and what’s on information see the website www.forestry.gov.uk
