postcard from Filby

Filby 28/02/04

Nestled in the heart of the Broads, Filby makes a delightful place to visit, particularly in the summer months when the village is awash with beautiful flowers for the Britain in Bloom competition. Emily Dennis tells of its delights.

Please note that the postcard from series ended in 2004 and that descriptions of shops and services were correct at time of going to press

Filby village signAny interesting history?

The name Filby is of Danish origin, recognisable by the “by” ending. From the middle of the 9th century, the area was subjected to many Danish invasions and became part of the Danelaw, receiving large numbers of Danish settlers. In Denmark there is a village called Fielby.
What makes it stand out? Filby has been hugely successful in the Anglia in Bloom competition. Residents work throughout the year to make sure everything stays in tip-top condition and, during the summer months, the village is a blaze of colour with hanging baskets on just about every post.
In 2002, the village won the competition for the fourth year running and secured a Royal Horticultural Society Gold Medal for the Britain in Bloom (village under 600) competition after being runner-up for two years.
Last year, Filby missed out on being chosen for the finals, but did come away with the East of England Tourist Board Trophy for the best village.

Where can I go for a drink?

The Fox and Hounds, in Thrigby Road, and the King’s Head, in Main Road, offer a range of beverages and food.

And a bite to eat?

Filby Bridge Restaurant, in Main Road, offers a large menu to suit all tastes.

What is there in the way of shops?

Despite being only a small village, Filby is well catered for and amenities include a post office, laundrette facilities and a hairdresser.

Are there any other things to see?

There are several local walks with maps available from the post office.
Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens always makes an enjoyable day out for all the family. The centre is open daily and is home to a variety of rare species such as the amur leopard and sumatran tiger. A café and giftshop are also open during the summer months.
